Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’ comes back…to off-broadway
.
Looks like we haven’t seen the last of Stephen King’s Carrie. King’s novel was made into a feature film in 1976 starring Sissy Spacek, then the story became a broadway musical in 1988 opening to poor reviews and closing after only 21 performances, losing a ton of money ($8 million buckaroos!)
.
According to The New York Times, New York’s MCC Theatre plans to retool the musical for modern audiences by cutting some of the more campy songs and humanising the character of Carrie’s mother, this time reopening as on off-Broadway venture.
.
“By opening off-Broadway, in a smaller and far different production, I think Carrie would receive a fair, fresh look that had nothing to do with its legend,” said MCC’s co-artistic director Bernard Telsey.
